Portorož - Grožnjan - Livade - Motovun - Vižinada - Poreč - Vrsar

Join a trip exploring the former narrow-gauge railway line ‘Parenzana’, which was turned into a true attraction for cyclists. You will be thrilled with the small, picturesque towns, and landscapes dotted with old villages through which you will pass. Sweeping into beautiful valleys with forests and rivers framing them and then emerging onto the slopes of the hills, the beauty of the nature will take your breath away. Take a short break and soak up the abundance of peace and greenery. On this interesting trip you will pass through tunnels, over bridges and viaducts, between olive groves and vineyards that give this area special charm. The medieval hill towns of Grožnjan and Motovun will delight you as much as the unique Poreč.

Day by day Itinerary

Day 1
Portorož or Piran

Independent arrival to Portorož or Piran in Slovenia. Overnight in Portorož or Piran.

Day 2
Portorož or Piran - Škofije - Portorož or Piran

At 0900HRS you will have a welcome briefing and fitting of your rental bike and other equipment. After the info meeting you will be transferred outside of Trieste, to Škofije or Muggia to avoid traffic in Trieste. From here you will start cycling on an old railway ‘Parenzana’. Overnight in Portorož or Piran. (B)

Day 3
Portorož or Piran - Grožnjan

After breakfast you will start biking on the legendary route of the ‘Parenzana’, the former narrow-gauge railway line which penetrates deeply into the Istrian Peninsula connecting 33 Istrian towns between Poreč and Trieste, located today on the territory of three countries. Passing through magnificent rolling landscapes and lively Istrian vineyards, it will become obvious why it was also known as the wine railway. Overnight in Grožnjan. (B)

Day 4
Grožnjan - Livade - Motovun

After you see Grožnjan’s galleries and viewpoints you can pass through magnificent rolling landscapes and lively Istrian vineyards. After passing through several tunnels, and over old bridges you can stop on many fascinating viewpoints before reaching the village of Livade, the truffle centre of the world where you can taste and buy some products with truffles. In front of Livade on a hill is a town of Motovun where your hotel is. Overnight in Motovun. (B)

Day 5
Motovun - Vižinada - Nova Vas - Poreč

Overlooking the Mirna River Valley, lies surely the most famous and attractive Istrian medieval town of Motovun. This captivating hilltop town is one of the characteristic symbols of the Istrian interior. The Romanesque-Gothic bell tower with a crenulated crown from the 13th century, standing next to the Parish Church of St Stephen from the 17th century, dominates the town's historic core. In the central square is the Romanesque Municipal Palace, the largest secular building in Istria of that period surrounded by many other historic buildings. Passing the tunnel under the town of Motovun ‘Parenzana’ will take you towards Poreč through the village of Vižinada. You will pass by Nova Vas village where you can visit Baredine Cave. Following the trail along the vineyards you will reach Poreč. This is a town where you can find material and spiritual evidence of great cultures at every step. Ride along the old town centre where you will find the Roman Forum, magnificent palaces from different historical periods, and to top it all, the famous UNESCO protected Euphrasian Basilica. Overnight in Poreč. (B)

Day 6
Poreč

Today you will bike from Poreč towards the surrounding countryside. As an option you will have an opportunity to stop in Baredine Cave. Last portion of the biking is next to the coastline towards Poreč. (B)

Day 7
Poreč - Vrsar - Kloštar - Vrsar or Poreč

A marsh, rare birds, a cursed city, an abandoned monastery, buried pirate treasure, a deep bay, a cave with a primitive man and a hermit, an ancient solar observatory - all this you can find on the bike trail of Captain Morgan. After riding along the coastline you will reach Vrsar, a romantic fishermen village where the famous Casanova came back twice. Bike ride continues through the magical forest Kontija with a panoramic view of the beautiful landscape of the Lim Bay, passing by the old Benedictine abbey at Kloštar. From Kloštar you are going back from Kontija towards Vrsar where you can enjoy in some of the nice restaurants and beaches. Overnight in Vrsar or Poreč. (B)

Day 8
Vrsar or Poreč

Breakfast at the hotel and check out. End of services. (B)
